The artwork shows the Grotto of Massabielle at Lourdes, France — the site where the Virgin Mary is said to have appeared to Bernadette Soubirous in 1858. A spring that Bernadette uncovered at the grotto has drawn pilgrims ever since. Lourdes became an international place of pilgrimage and devotion following a thorough ecclesiastical inquiry and formal recognition of the apparitions.

For generations, Irish pilgrims have travelled to Lourdes in great numbers — often through parish groups or diocesan pilgrimages — seeking comfort, healing, and spiritual renewal at this sacred site.

Thus, image of Our Lady of Lourdes appears frequently on Irish memorial cards.
